Bio / Résumé

Ryutaro Mishima immerses himself into multifaceted layers of space and time to explore individual and collective contemporary experience.  His trans-cultural, multidisciplinary practice includes performance, dance, theater, video, and photography.

Mishima was born in Japan.  He arrived in New York in 2000 with an extensive background in experimental theater.  Mishima has collaborated with Dean Moss on a performance work that has been presented by DTW, Dance Across Borders, and Sitelines:LMCC. Mishima’s own performance works have been presented by Danspace Project’s FOOD FOR THOUGHT.  As an actor/performer Mishima has worked for Big Dance Theater, RoseAnne Spradlin, Nami Yamamoto, Chris Yon, Yasuko Yokoshi and others.  He has received New York Dance and Performance Awards (Bessie Award) in 2006 and 2010.

Mishima has exhibited his sculpture, video, and photography at the National Art Club, Chashama Gallery, and Bertha and Karl Leubsdort Gallery in New York, and Tokyo Salon in Tokyo.  He is a recipient of Ruth Mellon Memorial Award and Francis Donin Award.  Additionally Mishima has designed video on performance works for DD Dorvillier, Renée Archibald, and Yasuko Yokoshi.
